STORY

Amaran (transl. The Immortal) is a 2024 Indian Tamil-language biographical action war film directed by Rajkumar Periyasamy and produced by Raj Kamal Films International in association with Sony Pictures Films India. The film stars Sivakarthikeyan as Major Mukund Varadarajan, alongside Sai Pallavi, Rahul Bose and Bhuvan Arora. It is an adaptation of Shiv Arur and Rahul Singh's book series India's Most Fearless: True Stories of Modern Military Heroes, which features a segment based on Mukund. The film follows Mukund's wife Indhu Rebecca Varghese, who narrates the life of the major as she travels to New Delhi to receive the Ashoka Chakra, which was awarded to Mukund posthumously. Movira


The film was officially announced in January 2022 under the working title Sivakarthikeyan 21, as it is his 21st film as the lead actor, and the official title was announced in February 2024. Principal photography began in May 2023 with a scattered schedule in Kashmir. A schedule in Chennai, which was again followed by another schedule held in Pondicherry, and was wrapped up a year later. Lachchami Deb Roy of Firstpost awarded the film three and a half stars out of five and commented, "Starring Jimmy Shergill, Tamannaah Bhatia, Avinash Tiwari, it is a heist thriller unlike any other. The film shines because of its plot and brilliant performances by each and every actor." She described it as a captivating thriller with intelligent twists, which maintains a gripping pace throughout its runtime and offers a clever, suspenseful experience that ends on a cliffhanger. Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express rated the film three out of five stars and said, "Neeraj Pandey's Netflix film is a rare beast in Bollywood, a pulpy character study in which you don't see the twist coming." She highlighted that the film is driven by a strong ensemble cast and a plot that continues to surprise despite its contradictions and occasional plot holes, and praised its focus on storytelling over star power, making it a refreshing OTT offering.


Indhu Rebecca Varghese, along with her daughter, Arshya Mukund, father-in-law, Varadarajan and mother-in-law, Geetha Varadarajan, are on their way to New Delhi to receive the Ashoka Chakra, which is being awarded to Indhu posthumously. . Indhu begins her undergraduate degree at Madras Christian College in Chennai, where Mukund is her senior. Indhu is selected as a model for a fashion show when many participants model from many colleges, where she will represent her college in a modeling event. Initially, she resists going, though Mukund, as her assistant, makes her reconsider her decision to participate. Eventually winning the competition, she thanks Mukund, and love blossoms between them. After some time, they fall in love and start dating, and Indhu finally realizes that she wants to join the Indian Army. However, her mother, Geeta, comes to know about this, starts opposing her decision; nevertheless, a determined Mukund clears his National Defence Academy entrance exam with the support of Indhu and Varadarajan.


Later, when Indhu is introduced to the Varadarajan family, her mother is immediately displeased and shows displeasure for the marriage, unlike her father and two sisters.


After several months of rigorous training, Mukund is promoted to rifle and gun trainer, serving in Mahogaon. Meanwhile, when Indhu expresses her love for Mukund to her family, her father George Varghese and her other elder brother Deebu show anger and reluctance, as he was a Tamilian and also an army officer. Tensions rise when George tells his commanding officer that his daughter loves Mukund, which angers Mukund. They eventually separate, disappointing Indhu.


After a year of silence, both the families agree to their marriage and they get married on June 30, 2009. Subsequently, the couple becomes pregnant and have a daughter named Arshya on March 17, 2011. After some time, Mukund is promoted to the role of Captain, serving in the United Nations Syria-Lebanon Border Mission.
