The film was officially announced in April 2019 under the working title of Surya 39, as it was the actor's 39th film as a leading actor; however, it was shelved due to the COVID-19 pandemic and work conflicts in India. The project resumed in August 2022 under the working title Surya 42. Principal photography began the same month and lasted for seventeen months before being completed in January 2024. Filming locations include Chennai, Goa, Kerala, Kodaikanal and Rajahmundry. The film features music by Devi Sri Prasad, cinematography by Vetri Palanisamy and editing by Nishadh Yusuf. The villagers were once warriors who guarded the sea, but after India gained its independence, they lost their relevance by becoming smugglers in the infamous Red Sea. Devra is the village chief and is part of a group that smuggles goods from merchant ships to Muruga along with Bhaira. Unbeknownst to them, the loots are illegal weapons that are used in looting, and one such incident happens near their village. During the smuggling operation, they are caught by the Coast Guard and the ship's commander, Irfan, reveals the items they were smuggling and how they expected respect from the descendants of the warriors. Kanguwa was released worldwide on 14 November 2024 in standard, 3D and IMAX formats. The film received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics, who praised Suriya's performance, production design and cinematography but criticized the lazy writing, poor screenplay, editing and sound design.
In 2024, Zeta, a young test subject for brain enhancement and superpower experiments, escapes from a Russian biomedical facility near the Indian border. The facility's commander deploys troops to recapture him. Meanwhile, in Goa, bounty hunter Francis Theodore works with his friend, Colt 95, to catch criminals under the Goa Police. In 1070, Roman troops attempt to conquer Perumachi, one of five islands off the southern Indian subcontinent. With the help of Koduvan, a local resident, they kill 100 warriors defending the island. However, one survivor, Selumara, escapes and warns the chieftain, Senthi. In retaliation, Senthi's son, Kanguva "Kanga", executes Koduvan in front of the tribe. Overcome with grief, Koduvan's wife surrenders their son Poruva to Kanga before fleeing in the fire and taking her own life. Kanga raises Poruva as her protege and trains him to be a warrior.
Having failed to capture Perumachi, the Romans form an alliance with the chieftain of a neighboring island, Arathi, Udhiran, which escalates the existing feud between the two islands. Udhiran's two sons attack Kanga and his tribe. During the struggle, Poruva stabs Kanga; despite this, Kanga overcomes his injuries, defeats Udhiran's sons, and later finds Poruva. He takes him back to Perumachi, but the tribe takes them both to the uninhabited Dark Island. On Dark Island, Kanga and Poruva grow close, forming a strong bond.
The women of Perumachi eventually kill Udhiran's third son, prompting Udhiran to launch a final assault on Dark Island. Kanga defeats Udhiran's forces and confronts him on his ship. In a selfless act, Poruva sacrifices himself to ensure Kanga's victory. Devastated, Kanga kills Udhiran and vows to dedicate his future life to honoring Poruva's sacrifice. With Udhiran's lineage largely destroyed, his illegitimate son, Rathangasan, born from a concubine, vows revenge.
In 2024, Francis is revealed to be the reincarnation of Kanga while Zeta is the reincarnation of Poruva. Francis tracks them down and attacks the Zeta plane. He retrieves Zeta and there is a brief moment where Kanga takes him. Francis, still confused by his connection to Zeta, takes him inside, it is unclear why he feels different feelings towards her. Meanwhile, the commander of the facility, Ryan, is revealed to be the reincarnation of Rathangasan. Fully aware of his past life, the Commander decides to personally capture Zeta and Francis.
